Maia Chochua
Maia Chochua is a Georgian lawyer with a Master’s degree in Public Administration and over 26 years of experience in advancing the rule of law, particularly through EU-funded programmes. Her work focuses on legal reform, policy development, and institutional strengthening across criminal justice and social sectors, with a strong emphasis on human rights.
She has over 14 years of experience in restorative justice, beginning with juvenile justice reforms in Georgia. Her work has contributed to diverting more than 7,000 cases from punitive systems through approaches such as victim–offender mediation. She also played a key role in drafting Georgia’s Juvenile Justice Code and is currently involved in legislative efforts to expand restorative justice to adults.
At international level, Maia works closely with organisations such as the Council of Europe and UNICEF. She is a Board Member and Vice-Chair of the European Forum for Restorative Justice, where she contributes to policy development and promotes restorative approaches as a means of building more humane and effective justice systems.
